Mandela Is Forever Free

Nelson Mandela is depicted in a movie poster for an upcoming theatre release on December 25, 2013.
Mr. Mandela has given me great inspiration in my photographic career. I photographed him in 1990, while he was visiting Washington, DC. In this photo, I created a ghost image of people walking by to give it presence. I used a simple point and shoot camera! Have a camera, any camera with you if you want to capture an image.

Size Seven

Hello photogs! I'm posting this photo to demonstrate just how something simple as a pair of shoes can inspire you to take a photograph. A photo can create mystery, just as this one did for me. I wondered, who left these shoes on a city sidewalk? I set the camera to B&W and used flash to create visual impact. Until next time, keep shooting!

Banksy Graffiti Photo

Hello photo gang! I photographed this graffiti done by the elusive street artist Banksy. This one is located in Washington, DC. Banksy is in New York City for the month of October to paint in the streets of the Big Apple. Banksy's work is present on streets, walls, and bridges of cities all over the world. Banksy uses a distinctive stenciling technique. Banksy's real name is unknown. I encourage you all to seek out and take photos of graffiti, because art like this can disappear as quickly as it appeared. Until next time, keep on clicking.

Bike Commuter

Hey photo buddies! I have returned this month with one of my street photos. I love bike riding, and like to photograph bikers on the road. I decided to take this one in black and white. The dark cars help to focus the eye on the subject. So, get out into the street and find your subject of interest. Until next time, keep on shooting!

Life Guard Shack

Hey guys! I hope you all got away this summer. I saw this Life Guard Shack on the way to the blue green ocean. The soft yet brilliant colors caught my eye. The camera was ready, and click! This colorful beach shack was taken in Florida's South Miami Beach. Travel photos are great. Always have your camera by your side. Until next time, keep shooting!

Miles the Puppet Performer

Hey folks! I waited for a few weeks to catch Miles' performance in the street. He is not just any puppet, but an accomplished singer. I saw Miles from the bus about five weeks ago, didn't have time to photograph him. This time I got off the bus and spent some time with him and his stage partner. I took this portrait with the lens set at 85mm, shutter speed at 1/10 sec., at f/2.8 and ISO of 400. I used my Fujifilm X10. I love photographing street performers. They make great subjects. Miles had a nice smile and was very friendly.

Scaffolded Monument

Hey, photogs! It's been a while, since I posted last. I'm posting this shot of the Nation's Capital Washington Monument that is under repair due to damage from the 2011 earthquake. It looks really cool to me, like an erector set kit I used to build when I was a kid. A Fujifilm X10 digital camera was used to capture this metal clad monument. The ISO was 100, 1/640 sec. F / 4.0. The camera was set at a focal length of 28mm.

Memorial Day Bike

Hey photogs! The motorcycle symbolizes the freedom of this great country. I photograph this American icon all the time. The bike you see here caught my attention. I had my camera ready. The play of the red motorcycle in contrast with the black car made for an eye catching subject. This is one of the many thousands of bikes that roll through the Nation's Capital every Memorial Day.

Movement in Pink

Hello everyone. I hope you guys are photographing your favorite flowers this spring season. They make great greeting cards. Experiment with low ISO to get shallow depth of field and in this example, some of the flowers are blurred. Set your camera to the macro setting to help you in creating this effect. The camera sometimes sees what the eye doesn't. Life is not static. Even a flower has movement, caused by a slight breeze. Observing nature is fascinating. Until next time, happy shooting!

Running Boy

Hey phototogs! On my way to see the cherry blossoms I saw this boy running. My camera was in hand, and I caught him in action. The Washington Monument provided a great background. The film camera used is a Leica M6 with 35mm F/2.5 lens. The film is Kodak Ektar 100. A film with good contrast and saturation. Film is still alive, it's got soul!

Sidewalk Silhouette

Hello fellow photographers. Welcome to spring. I hope you all took lots of photos over the winter. The daylight hours are now increasing. I created this image after work, while walking toward the bus stop. I love silhouettes, and the low setting sun allowed this visual theme. The art of photography is looking for moments that are happening. The trick is to have your camera and to seize the moment before it fades away. My next photo will explore HDR (High Dynamic Range). Watch for it on my next blog post.

Metro Rail Train

Hey, how is everyone? It was a long winter. I escaped the winter for a few days and spent some time in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I took a lot of shots at the beach, but this one of a metro car overhead and a cityscape in the background, is one of my favorites. I like trains of all kinds. I waited for the train to come. Waiting for something to happen takes patience. Be ready to watch, listen, and respond.

Cooper's Hawk

Hey nature fans! I'm a bird watcher, and this Cooper's Hawk was just outside my window. I set up my camera and clicked away until my fine feathered friend flew off to try and catch a tasty treat. I used a Nikon D700 along with a Nikkor 300mm telephoto lens with a 2x teleconverter attached. The camera's ISO was 400, the shutter speed was 1/320 sec., and the aperture set at F8. The focal length of 600mm brought the view of this bird of prey closer to create a dynamic photo.

Dupont Circle Fountain

The point and shoot camera has come a long way. I carry one everywhere. The image quality is better than an iPhone or another handheld device with a built-in camera. The image here of the Dupont Circle fountain, located in North West Washington, DC, was captured with an Olympus Stylus TG-610. I take a photograph almost everyday. The trick is to have the camera, any camera, with you, ready to capture what your eye sees. A beautiful sunset in the city, in the middle of winter.

Winter Night in the City

Hey shooters! My New Year's resolution is to post on my blog once or twice a week. I saw this scene on the way home. I used my Olympus Tough TG-610 camera. I set the camera's white balance to tungsten light setting. An ISO setting of 400 was set on the camera. I like the blurred image of the person walking into the frame. The advertisement of the woman and the beer bottle adds brightness to the scene.

Cargo Locomotive

Hey, photogs! It's a new year and I hope you all are taking pictures. I love trains, and this is a CSX locomotive engine I photographed while waiting for a Metro train. I like taking pictures of them because the train reminds me of how America runs its cargo across this great country. I used my Fujifilm X10 digital camera. Remember, if you see it, photograph it!
